Training Courses and Tutorials

SPECIAL OFFER

For a limited period we are holding the introductory price of $190 for the Concept Ontology Engineering Tutorial until 26 March 2021.

Please go to Introduction to Concept Ontology Engineering (Special Offer) to enroll.

Once enrolled you may choose to attend the in person presentation of this course on Saturday 27 March and 3 April, or you may work through the materials and exercises at your own pace (recordings will be provided after the cut-off date). The course will remain available after these dates and new subscribers are welcome to enrol after 26 March at the higher rate. This will be the last chance to catch the in-person presentation of this material by Mike Bennett.

Interactive Tutorials (Weekends) - On Request

To make it easier for people who can't get time off work, we can re-run the real-time interactive Tutorials on Concept Ontology Engineering on a weekend basis if enough people sign up or confirm dates with me by email. These would run on 2 consecutive Saturdays. Typically Eastern Time (US and Canada) but other times zones can be arranged.

Available Courses (see below):

  • Introduction to Concept Ontology Engineering

  • Financial Ontologies and FIBO

  • Concept Modeling with Cameo Concept Modeler (CCM)

Please sign up to the Hypercube School page on Teachable to be kept up to date with dates and details of courses and to have your say on preferred dates and times.

Please mail me if you are interesed in other time arrangements - for example once a week (half day, day or session) over a period of weeks, or if you would prefer to see the Learn As You Go (LAYG) option so you can work through the material in your own time (but you don't get the same benefit of interacting with other trainees).

On-line Tutorial in Ontology Engineering

This two-day on-line tutorial covers the principles of conceptual modeling: classification, representing concepts in formal logics, foundational concepts and creating OWL ontology artifacts to work with these. We also survey the distinctions between kinds of ontology and how to put these to work in a business setting.

This can be delivered as pre-recorded 'Learn As You Go' or as a fully interactive on-line event. This training includes a virtual field trip to the British Museum. No specific technical knowledge is assumed but you should be passionate about the business-level understanding of meanings in data or business information.

Cost: USD $190 per person for 2 days. PRICE HELD UNTIL 26 MARCH 2021 ONLY

Please register here via our Teachable page.

Financial Ontologies and FIBO

The introductory tutorial sets you up for our one-day deep dive into the Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO) with explanations of the conceptual framework for a range of financial instruments, loans, corporate actions and business entities.

Cost: USD $95 per person for 1 day.
The Concept Ontology Engineering on-line tutorial is a pre-requisite for this training module.

Concept Modeling with Cameo Concept Modeler

This on-line tutorial covers the basics of conceptual modeling using the Cameo Concept Modeler (CCM) plug-in for MagicDraw from Dassault Systemes.

This can be delivered as a fully interactive on-line event or learn as you go. You do not need to have CCM installed but it will help to be familiar with the Dassault MagicDraw suite of tools.

Cost: USD $190 per person.

On Line Training Details

On-line training sessions are presented using Teachable. There are two modes of on-line teaching:

  1. Interactive, real-time instruction
  2. Learn As You Go

Interactive sessions work just like in-person training, but are delivered via screen sharing (GoToMeeting). This allows for a lot of interaction between students and teacher, and cross-pollination of ideas, feedback and insights among members of the class.

There is even the option of a field trip (via the magic of Google Maps) like our recent trip to the British Museum. Slides are posted to the Teachable site and recordings are posted after the event for attendees to listen to again in their own time.

Learn As You Go (LAYG) is the more traditional way of using these on-line teaching platforms. Students learn at their own pace over a period of time. Teaching material is a combination of slides and 'canned' recordings. Where possible, important interactions are replaced by exercises that the student carries out between video segments.

The Learn As You Go courses have not been written or recorded yet - these will be made available as soon as this is done. Please mail me if you are keen to get started on one of these.

Your instructor (Mike Bennett) is available to answer questions in non real time both for LAYG and for the real-time interactive courses any time after presentation. I aim to respond to all such questions within 48 hours, usually nearer 24.

This is in addition to in person teaching and one-on-one virtual or in person for individuals or teams - please see full prospectus below.

For details of available on-line courses please see the Hypercube School page on our Teachable site.

Training Courses and Tutorials - Bespoke Online and In-person Teaching Options

Hypercube Ltd. is pleased to offer a range of in person and on-line training courses presented by Mike Bennett on conceptual ontology engineering. In these courses, participants will learn about a new way of modeling the knowledge of the business in unambiguous technology-neutral language. This is called an 'ontology'.

These tutorials teach a range of techniques to define the formal semantics of business information. Learn how to use high level abstractions to differentiate between concepts and how to classify these. Learn how these kinds of models can be put to work in addressing common data modeling problems, reducing integration costs and revealing new insights from your data.

The courses teach similar material at differing levels of detail. These are:

Concept Ontology Engineering

These can also be adapted for on-line presentation at your request

One day Introduction to Conceptual Ontology Engineering. An accessible introduction to the principles of concept articulation and ontology modeling.

Three-day Intensive Course in Ontology Modeling. Recommended for attendees with some semantic modeling / ontology experience.

In the three-day course the first day also serves as an introduction for more senior decision-makers who need to know how this kind of model fits into the development ecosystem but may not need to originate concept models themselves.

Some of the material described is focused toward to the financial services industry. We have also presented the two-day tutorial in the cinema and TV production industry. These components can be varied for other industries or focused on specific disciplines as required.

If you are a data architect, are responsible for development, risk or reporting in a data-intensive area (like finance) or if you are someone who wants to explore new opportunities in micro-finance, big data, Blockchain or data visualization, one of these courses is for you.

Please download our Prospectus on Conceptual Ontology Engineering training.

FIBO Training

This can also be adapted for on-line presentation at your request, at various levels of detail or content coverage.

FIBO provides an integrated suite of OWL ontologies that are highly optimised for reasoning and inference processing applications in the financial industry. These have been developed from an earlier conceptual framework developed by Hypercube Ltd. We offer training on all aspects of the deployment and extension of FIBO ontologies, in collaboration with the EDM Council and the team of experts involved in the development of FIBO.

Please contact us with details of your requirements. Based on our unique methodology on how to create and use different kinds of ontology for different applications, we can teach you the many ways you can extending and use FIBO. From this we will identify the specific training modules best suited to your needs, and arrange that each of these is presented by a leading expert in that aspect of ontology development and deployment.

Registration is now CLOSED for the September and November 2020 sessions (existing registrees / attendees may continue to access this material).

Earlier Training Presentations

Allen, Texas, May 2019: Training Materials Example Slides

The one-day training course slides below are based on a one-day tutorial delivered at the 2019 MBSE Cyber Experience Symposium in Allen, Texas in May 2019. These slides are similar to the more in-depth material presented in Cape Town, South Africa in September 2018 at the FOIS conference.

Here are the slides:

This presentation used the Cameo Concept Modeler tool from Dassault / NoMagic. The training session started with a simple example of some real world concepts. Additional concept modeling techniques were introduced in the course of the day. The session included some 'Socratic' dialog (to and fro discussions) to tease out important issues. Participants may download the tool and follow along if they wish.
